Boris Johnson was moved into intensive care last night suffering from symptoms of Covid-19. As far as we know, he isn’t on a ventilator at this stage.
It’s easy to take potshots at Johnson for this – about his initial poor coronavirus response, about his opposition to an NHS pay rise, about his strange brag about shaking hands with the potentially infected.
Now is not the time for this.
Boris Johnson is our Prime Minister, and you can love or loathe him for that – but he is also a son, a brother, a father and a soon to be husband. The man means a lot to many people, and he also won over the country, regardless of whether he won you or not. We need consistency right now, we need a coordinated response – if human decency isn’t your reason for wishing him well, let logic be it.
I was sceptical to even write this article, because I didn’t want to look opportunistic; but the vile response on Twitter and other social media wishing Boris the worst is unimaginable. Why does this have to be a political matter? I was hoping for Jeremy Hunt in the leadership election and am a paid supporter of the Labour Party – doesn’t mean I can’t wish a man who is potentially very ill well.
I think everyone in the country is hoping for a recovery to our Prime Minister.
